A Stitch In Heritage

This handmade quilt honors the tailoring traditions of Carlentini, Sicily, and the deep roots of Omaha’s Sicilian-American community. Its puzzle-patterned stitching symbolizes the complexity of our lineage, brought to life in the green, white, and red of the Italian flag. At its heart is the Trinacria, symbol of Sicily’s strength, fertility, and unity.

Created as a labor of love by Kathy Folweiler, daughter of Mary Akers, the seamstress who in 1963 sewed the original Santa Lucia statue vest, adorned with jewelry representing answered prayers. That same year, Mary also created the green queen’s cape, worn each year by the newly elected Santa Lucia Festival Queen.

Proceeds benefit the Carlentini-Omaha Association USA, Inc., supporting cultural education and heritage initiatives for future generations.

With heartfelt thanks to Kathy Folweiler for continuing a legacy of devotion through every stitch.
